How much does home care cost in NJ?

The cost of home care varies depending on the type of care, the number of hours, and the schedule your family needs. We don’t publish rates online because a number without context isn’t very useful — what matters is understanding exactly what your situation requires and building a plan around that. What is the difference between companion care and personal care?

Companion care is for seniors who are largely independent but benefit from company, help around the house, and someone to share the day with. Think conversation, meals, errands, light housekeeping, and rides to appointments.

Personal care goes a step further and includes hands-on assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, and mobility. If your parent needs physical help with daily routines, personal care is the right fit.

What is respite care?

Respite care is temporary relief for family caregivers. If you are the one doing most of the caregiving for a parent or loved one, respite care gives you a scheduled break — a few hours, a full day, or longer — knowing that someone you trust is there in your place.

It is not giving up. It is how you sustain yourself so you can keep showing up.

Does Lumara accept insurance or Medicaid?

Lumara Home Care is a private-pay agency. We do not accept Medicaid or Medicare.

If you have a long-term care insurance policy, we can provide the documentation your insurer needs to support reimbursement. We recommend calling your policy provider directly to understand your benefits before your first care conversation with us.

We are not currently a VA-enrolled provider, though we expect to be in the near future. If you are a veteran or a veteran’s family, feel free to reach out and we will tell you where things stand.

How quickly can care start?

In most cases we can begin care within 24 to 72 hours of your initial consultation, depending on your scheduling needs and the caregiver match. If your situation is urgent, tell us that when you call. We will do everything we can to move quickly.

What areas do you serve in Bergen County?

We serve families throughout Bergen County, NJ, including Hackensack, Paramus, Englewood, Teaneck, Fort Lee, Ridgewood, and the surrounding communities. If you are not sure whether we cover your area, just call and ask.

Are your caregivers background checked?

Yes. Every caregiver goes through a comprehensive criminal background check, reference checks, and an in-person interview before they are ever placed in a home. We are selective by design. The people we send into your family’s home are people we would trust in our own.

What is memory care or dementia care at home?

Memory care at home means specialized support for someone living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. It requires a different kind of caregiver — someone with patience, training, and the ability to meet a person exactly where they are on any given day.

Our caregivers receive specialized dementia and memory care training. They understand how to create calm, maintain routine, handle moments of confusion with dignity, and make the day feel safe and familiar rather than disorienting.

How do I know if my parent needs home care?

There is no single answer, but there are signs. Meals not being made. Medications missed. The house not being kept up the way it used to be. Social withdrawal. A fall, or a near miss. A hospital discharge that left you wondering how your parent was going to manage alone.

If you have noticed any of these and found yourself worrying, that worry is worth paying attention to. A care consultation costs nothing and gives you a clearer picture of what kind of support would actually help.

What is a home health aide (CHHA)?

A Certified Home Health Aide is a caregiver who has completed state-certified training in personal care, safety, and basic health monitoring. In New Jersey, CHHAs are certified through the state and are qualified to assist with bathing, grooming, dressing, mobility, and similar hands-on personal care tasks.

What is non-medical home care?

Non-medical home care covers everything that makes daily life possible — companionship, personal care, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, and transportation — without medical treatment or skilled nursing. If a task doesn’t require a medical license, it likely falls under non-medical home care.

Lumara is a non-medical home care agency. We do not provide skilled nursing or medical procedures in the home.

Can I change my caregiver if it’s not a good fit?

Yes, always. A caregiver match that isn’t working is not something you should feel stuck with. We take matching seriously from the start, but if something feels off we want to know immediately. We will find a better fit without any friction.

What happens during a care assessment?

A care assessment is a conversation, not an evaluation. We come to you, meet your parent in their own environment, listen to what your family needs, and get a real sense of the situation. From there we put together a care plan and talk through caregiver matching.

It is low pressure, completely free, and usually takes about an hour. Most families tell us it was more useful than they expected.

What is the minimum number of hours per visit?

Our minimum shift is four hours. This ensures your caregiver has enough time to do the job well and that the visit feels like genuine support rather than a rushed check-in.

Is home care better than a nursing home or assisted living?

For many families, yes. Most people want to stay home, and when the right support is in place, staying home is often the better option — better for comfort, better for dignity, and better for the sense of continuity that matters so much as people age.
